Smart Breakfast Ideas for Children

(HealthCastle.com) Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it contributes to health and well-being in numerous ways – especially for children. But because we’re often in a hurry to get out the door in the morning, breakfast is the meal most often skipped by children and adults.
Planning is Key
The key to eating a healthy breakfast is planning. Keep easy-to-prepare, healthy breakfast items on-hand. Plan a few extra minutes each morning to prepare and eat breakfast. The following weekday ideas are quick and easy, and although its preferable to sit down to breakfast, many can be eaten (or modified to be eaten) on-the-go.
Breakfast Idea 1: Quick, Easy, and Healthy (Weekday)
Low-fat vanilla or fruit-flavored yogurt topped with unsweetened, whole grain cereal, and a piece of fresh fruit, such as an apple.
An unsweetened, whole grain breakfast bar, fresh fruit (try a banana), and low-fat milk.
Unsweetened, whole wheat (or other whole grain) frozen toaster waffles topped with low-fat vanilla or fruit-flavored yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, jam, or natural peanut butter (or other nut butter) and eaten like toast, rather than with a fork. Top with sliced fruit, such as peaches, or serve with easy-to-eat fruit, such as grapes or blueberries.
Unsweetened, whole grain cereal with low-fat milk, topped with fruit such as banana or strawberry slices, blueberries, raisins, or dried cranberries.
Brown rice cakes (unsalted or lightly-salted) with natural peanut (or other nut) butter or reduced-fat cream cheese, topped with slices of fresh fruit, such as strawberries or banana.
Fruit and yogurt smoothie: blend low-fat vanilla or fruit-flavored yogurt with fresh or unsweetened frozen fruit. If necessary, add a splash of low-fat milk or 100% fruit juice, depending upon flavor and consistency. Use ice cubes, if needed, to reach the desired consistency.
Breakfast Idea 2: Fun and Nutritious (Weekends)
Homemade Whole Grain Pancakes or Waffles
Add food coloring (such as red for Valentine’s Day and green for St. Patrick’s Day). Or add fruit faces after they have finished cooking: 2 banana slices for the eyes, half of a strawberry for the nose, and an apple slice or half of a pineapple ring for the mouth. Throw fruit – such as banana slices or fresh or frozen blueberries – into the batter for added flavor and nutrition. Use cookie cutters to form pancakes into fun shapes. See below for topping ideas.
Homemade French Toast Sticks
Use whole grain bread, such as 100% whole wheat. You can cut the bread into strips to make the “sticks” either before or after cooking. For a healthier batter, use nonfat milk and egg substitute. Give each child a few small bowls of “dip” for their sticks (see below).
Topping Ideas

For pancakes, waffles, and french toast sticks: unsweetened applesauce, low-fat vanilla or fruit-flavored yogurt, fresh fruit (try strawberries, banana slices, or blueberries), natural peanut (or other nut) butter, honey, apple butter, fruit syrup (try blueberry), reduced-fat plain or flavored cream cheese, cinnamon

Does this sound like you? Then let us help you find the best kids vacations place for you. We can help you with driving or flying destinations. Long vacations, short vacations, traveling on a budget and even provide some valuable Do’s and Don’ts for your consideration when traveling with kids.
Best Vacations with Kids

Diapers? Check. Endless supply of Goldfish crackers and juice boxes? Check. Puzzles, Barbie dolls and tiny plastic dinosaurs? Check, check, check.
Any parent knows that traveling with kids is an exercise in logistical planning. The good news is many all-inclusive vacation spots now exist that strive to understand what families need — and provide it.
Tops on parents’ wish list are activities to keep Junior occupied, a plentiful and always available supply of kid-friendly food (think buffet), family-friendly sleeping arrangements and even an extra set of hands to ensure Mom and Dad get a break too.
Catering to these needs — and offering the bonus of a vacation tab that’s nailed down in advance — are all-inclusive family-oriented resorts. These establishments often feature fantastic pools, water sports and supervised kiddie clubs for the young ones, plus spas, fine dining and adult entertainment for their parents.
Deals vary, but your bill at most all-inclusive resorts includes lodging, food and drink (including alcoholic beverages), transportation to and from the resort, taxes, gratuities, non-motorized water sports, organized games and activities, kiddie clubs (though some resorts add a fee for this) and evening entertainment.
Taking advantage of these resorts lets parents spend less time thinking about where to eat and what their kids will do, and more time relaxing.
Below we’ve selected our top picks for resorts and resort companies that make time off with the kids as good as time off should feel.
Family Fun Vacations

Your fabulous family vacation begins just steps away from your hotel. Loll in the sun on dazzling white sand beaches, swim in clear Caribbean waters, play some beach tennis, pamper yourself with a beach massage or spa treatment, or get ready for some wet ‘n wild adventure offered by a multitude of water sports ranging from banana boats to jet-skis.
On and In the Water
For a glorious day out on the sea, hop aboard a luxury catamaran. Sparkling Caribbean waters, refreshing trade winds, warm tropical sun and a magnificent ever-changing island panorama complement your cruise. Relax on-deck or discover the spectacular underwater fantasy that lies beneath. Snorkel around coral reefs blazing with the bold colors of amazing marine life or explore the secrets of sunken wrecks.
A jaunt to De Palm Island, an Aruba all-inclusive getaway with a spectacular water park, is the perfect family adventure. SEA TREK is a safe once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Behold a brilliant world of sea life as you walk twenty feet below the surface in zero gravity along a 375-foot-long path. Snorkelers will love SNUBA, a fusion of snorkeling and scuba; descend to a depth of 20 feet as air is delivered through a long hose from tanks on the surface.
Creature Features

Turn your children’s Aruba vacation into a fun and learning experience with countless adventures and activities that will stimulate them, peak their curiosity and teach them about Aruba’s unique natural habitat, heritage and language. Though it may be challenging to pull them away from the beach, they will delight in the island’s “creature features.”
The Butterfly Farm is a wondrous tropical oasis inhabited by hundreds of fluttering brightly-hued specimens whirling by in their timeless dance. Kids can witness their fascinating metamorphosis from cocoons. Somewhat curious to find on a Caribbean island is the Aruba Ostrich Farm. Kids can stroke their feathers, hand-feed them, and visit the hatcheries of the world’s largest birds. Some reach a weight of 300 pounds, a height of ten feet, and a lifespan of 80 years! Maintained by donations and volunteers, the rustic nearby Donkey Sanctuary maintains, feeds and provides medical care to over fifty adorable and endangered animals; you can even adopt one!
Explore the Culture

Most resorts have special kids’ programs and some have all-day camps. Sand castle building, shell hunting tours, art classes, Papiamento language classes, and merengue dancing are just some of the activities. Nature walks are the perfect way to learn about unique flora and fauna including tropical plants, lizards, iguanas, and birds such as the twittering chuchubi and the bashful barica geel. The observation deck at the nearby Bubali Bird Sanctuary is the perfect spot to view the lush oasis that is home to eighty species of migratory birds.
Desert landscape, untamed coastline, sandy coves and interesting historical and cultural sites provide exciting off-road safari adventure. Explore the unique beauty of Aruba’s outback and natural wonders such as the secluded Natural Pool. The daring will opt for a wild drive through Arikok National Park, perhaps ending with a calm swim at Baby Beach.

Childrens Bedroom Collections

Nursery Furniture
The simple aim of our business remains the same as it ever was: to make that space a reality with well designed, well made furniture and accessories that will look good and do their job without fuss for years to come.”
Established in 2002

We noticed that it was impossible to find well designed and well priced beds and furniture for children. The choice seemed to be between cheap and basic from the high street or madly pricey from an “heirloom designer”.
We still make our own furniture
We have been making good quality furniture for a very long time and like to think we know a lot about it. We have a factory in Wiltshire that builds some of our premium furniture ranges and we have been directly involved in the creation of dedicated factory units in other countries where the relevant wood is grown. All of our factories, UK or overseas, make exclusively for us to our very demanding standards.
Apparently we are a cutting edge Cross-Channel Retailer
Don’t know about that but to us it seems logical to offer our customers a choice of ways to buy from us: whether it is by phone to our nice Customer Service people in Warminster, online via our website at www.aspace.co.uk or in one of our stores (4 so far, more to come).
We stand by our products
All of our products come with a 100% no-holds-barred, five-star, no-quibbles guarantee. If you are in any way dissatisfied with them we will take them back, no questions asked. And if you simply change your mind, we’ll take them back then too. Happily neither happens very often.
We care about the environment and we set high ethical standards
We work very hard to try and ensure that factories use timber from responsibly managed and renewable sources; and wherever possible we organise regular audits on a wide range of measures from manufacturing standards to employee welfare.
We employ about 90 people
All of them hard working, most of them relatively sane, some of them inclined to be a bit boisterous at our occasional after-work visits to the local pub.

Fantastic savings on this stunning bedroom furniture range that is sure to make any little girl feel like a princess in her very own heart-themed bedroom.
Brilliant savings on this quality range of boys’ bedroom furniture that effortlessly combines sturdy practicality, stylish details and classic good looks.

Children growing weaker as computers replace outdoor activity
Modern life is ‘producing a generation of weaklings’, claims research as physical strength declines in 10-year-olds

A shift away from outdoor activities has made children weaker compared to previous generations, research reveals. Photograph: Andrew Payne /Alamy
Children are becoming weaker, less muscular and unable to do physical tasks that previous generations found simple, research has revealed.
As a generation dedicated to online pursuits grows up, 10-year-olds can do fewer sit-ups and are less able to hang from wall bars in a gym. Arm strength has declined in that age group, as has their ability to grip an object firmly.
The findings, published in the child health journal Acta Paediatrica, have led to fresh concern about the impact on children’s health caused by the shift away from outdoor activities.
Academics led by Dr Gavin Sandercock, a children’s fitness expert at Essex University, studied how strong a group of 315 Essex 10-year-olds in 2008 were compared with 309 children the same age in 1998. They found that:
The number of sit-ups 10-year-olds can do declined by 27.1% between 1998 and 2008
Arm strength fell by 26% and grip strength by 7%
While one in 20 children in 1998 could not hold their own weight when hanging from wall bars, one in 10 could not do so in 2008.
Children’s Activity Holidays

Memories that your children will savour forever
Cast your mind back to the carefree days of childhood and family holidays full of fun and laughter. Live them again with your own children and share their wonder. In the beautiful setting of the forest, even simple activities take on a new dimension. Let the magic rub off and see their confidence grow.
A Children’s Activity Holiday at Center Parcs will give the whole family the chance to spend precious time together, as well as quenching your children’s enormous thirst for the sort of non-stop fun that can leave adults trailing in their wake. Thankfully, we believe in looking after everybody, which means that when you need a little time to yourself, there are plenty of supervised activities for the children to get their teeth into while you sneak off for some downtime.
Take the Time Out Clubhouse, for example. Here, your kids will make new friends of their own age and take part in expertly organised activities that will develop their creativity, satisfy their curiosity and keep them amused while you head for the Aqua Sana Spa or just enjoy a little peace and quiet.
Indoors and outdoors, we can create a children’s activity holiday that your kids will remember for a lifetime. From soccer skills training, abseiling, horse riding, canoeing and paintballing, to movie making, arts and crafts, fashion and DJing, there’s something for every age and temperament. Letting your youngsters off the leash has never been safer and more fun, and at Center Parcs it forms a natural counterpoint to the time you’ll spend together, making memories that will last forever.
Physical Activity and Children

AHA Scientific Position
Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for developing coronary artery disease. It also increases the risk of stroke and such other major cardiovascular risk factors as obesity, high blood pressure, low HDL (“good”) cholesterol and diabetes. The American Heart Association recommends that children and adolescents participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

Half-term holiday fun for kids in Coventry and Warwickshire

SCHOOL’S out and there’s lots of fun in store for the half-term break in Coventry and Warwickshire.
Dancing sheep, time-travelling adventures and sorcery and magic are just some of the treats on offer for families next week.

It gives visitors the chance to experience the magic of the Arthurian legend first hand and budding princesses can prepare for their very own Prince Charming at the Princess Tower.
The popular tower has been given a spring makeover and the Princess Gallery introduces the royal family’s newest bride, Princess Catherine.

If that’s not enough to keep the kids busy, visitors can also catch the Warwick Warriors, who will showcase their arsenal of weapons and teach the art of mediaeval battle and the Castle Dungeon will also be open throughout Whitsun to take fresh victims.
Extra Holiday Fun for Kids

To make sure even the youngest holidaymakers enjoy their trips to the full, flythomascook has launched the new Kids’ Club on their website with loads of great games, facts, stories and travel advice for the little ones. The Kids’ Club has four sections: Before we go, At the airport, On the plane and At the beach.
Before we go There are so many fun things children can do while looking forward to their holidays. This section shows how chosing a destination or packing your suitcase can be a game. For those who have booked flights to Tenerife, one of the other Canary Islands or Mainland Spain, flythomascook has even developed a cool memory game to teach all family members the basics of Spanish! Greek and Turkish versions of the card game are also available.
At the Airport Once the excitement of the airport has worn off, children tend to get bored of waiting. You can bust boredom by downloading the maps, games and fairy tales from this page. The exotic travel stories by Deborah Klaassen are illustrated, so kids can colour in the pictures as well. All you need to do is download the pdf files, print them out on a sheet of A4 paper and make sure you have some crayons or colouring pencils handy!

List of Fun Exercises for Kids

In 2003 to 2004, 17.1 percent of American children and adolescents were overweight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, warned in the “Journal of the American Medical Association” in April 2006 that the rate of obese and overweight children will continue to climb. Encouraging your child to give up the television and computer in favor of physical activity can help him manage his weight. To create a positive association with exercise and help your kids get their recommended 60 minutes of activity a day, make exercise fun for kids.
Yoga
Yoga can help kids connect to their bodies and tap into their imagination. Yoga enhances flexibility, improves strength, develops coordination and fosters body awareness explains Marsha Wenig, creater of the YogaKids video and educational curriculum on Yoga Journal. To make yoga fun, have kids act out animal poses like cat and cow, eagle and lion. Make a yoga practice a story, talking about the trees as they perform tree pose, a snake as they do locust or cobra, and the weather as you have them act like reeds swaying in the wind. Encourage them to move off their mat and make sounds.
How to Find Fun Exercises For Kids

There are many fun exercises to get kids off the couch and away from the video games. According to the American Heart Association, over 30 percent of U.S. kids are now overweight compared to 4 percent from 1971-1974. This should be alarming for most parents, that they need to find some ways to get their kids more exercise. This article has some tips to get your kids to have fun exercising.

Make an obstacle course. Put running, jumping, crawling, and climbing into the course. Kids will go through the obstacle course and want to do it over and over to improve their time. They will be getting a great workout in the process.
2 – Get a Wii Fit. As of October 2009 a new Wii fit is available that offers improvements to the very popular original Wii fit. As the device says kids will have so much fun they will not realize that they are exercising. There are balancing games, exercises, and snow skiing to enjoy as they get some exercise.
3 – Get your kids to dance more. Most kids love to dance. Find some music they enjoy and set up a dance party where they put on a show or compete against a sibling or a friend. Some of the video game makers even have the dance game mats that may interest kids to play a game while they dance.
4 – Make a fitness challenge for them. Offer them rewards for meeting certain goals like prizes, special trips, or special time with their parents. Put in challenges like long jump, 40 yard dash, throwing a ball the longest, kicking a football the longest, most sit ups, most push ups, etc. Keep track of their progress on a chart. Set goals with them and when they reach their goals give them their reward.
5 – Make a walking or running challenge. Find a track, around the yard, or other circular course they can walk or jog. Keep track of their laps. Measure the course to calculate the distance. Find out how many laps are needed to reach 1 mile (there are 5280 feet in 1 mile). Make something like a necklace or a chart for them. Each mile they walk or run give them a bead or a sticker as a reward. When they reach larger milestones give them larger rewards to encourage more exercise.
6 -Take them swimming or get them on a swim team. Swimming is one of the best exercises kids can get because of the natural resistance and kindness to their growing joints. Even overweight kids can do well competing on a swim team. They will enjoy the new friends they can make on a team and ribbons and trophies are giving out if they can place in an event. Even if they are not on a team just passing a ball with them in the water or playing tag in the water is great exercise for any kid.
Exercises for Children

In my years of experience working with fitness programs for kids, I have discovered that the hardest thing for kids has been keeping up with a fitness plan. This is why I set up fitness programs for kids that have a unique approach which allows me to address their special needs. These programs are special because they work on areas such as decreasing body fat, Improving muscle and bone mass, increasing the ability to perform work with less fatigue, and increasing metabolism and endurance; all of which make the heart stronger. A strong heart means a healthy child.
One of the problems that children find is that most programs are designed for adults. For this reason many children do not obtain the results that they seek, and they lose interest in programs that are not enjoyable for them.
My programs for kids offer the best personal training workouts because they are designed expressly for children. Since children enjoy fun and games, the exercises are presented in the form of games. This is why I offer simple strategies and tactics that will change your child’s body composition at the same time that he is having fun playing.
